Welcome to Primary 2 session 2018-2019

Welcome to our first blog of the new session!

It's been a great start for the boys and girls in Primary 2 and Miss Caldow and myself have had a lot of fun getting to know our new class.

Over the summer holidays pupils had lots of fun growing their sunflowers. Thanks to all who sent pictures and even plants to show us how well they had grown!!

We all enjoyed learning about children's rights and had fun creating our superhero characters for our Class Charter.

We learned about our right to "relax and play" and, in our groups, designed these playgrounds. We also discussed the rights of children with disabilities and learned the deaf alphabet.

It was lovely to meet some parents, grandparents and other family members and friends at the P2 lunch and at the Information Evening last week.

OUR LEARNING THIS TERM:

NUMERACY AND MATHS: We will be using the new SEAL programme to teach about numbers (sequencing, addition and subtraction). We will also be learning about Time (days, months, seasons and the clock).

LITERACY: The children will be using Storyworlds/ORT books for reading. Reading will be heard on Mondays and Thursdays and new homework/sightwords will be given on these days.
In Writing lessons we will be trying to use good describing words in our stories.
In Grammar lessons we will be learning to use capital letters and full stops.
Spelling and phonics lessons will focus on the words and sounds on the homework sheets and a spelling test will be given on Thursdays.

HEALTH AND WELLBEING: Miss Caldow will be working with the children to find out about the importance of a healthy diet and  she will be teaching them to identify healthy foods through our Very Hungry Caterpillar topic.

SOCIAL STUDIES: This term the class will learn about the Ancient Egyptians. Mr. Millar (P3),  Mr. Fraser and myself will be working with all three classes to deliver a variety of lessons exploring Pharaohs, Egyptian Gods and Hieroglyphs. Miss Caldow will be helping the children to examine Ancient Egyptian culture through Art lessons.

HOMEWORK:

MONDAY: Reading and sightwords for Thursday.
TUESDAY: Maths worksheet or task
WEDNESDAY: Spelling and phonics sheet (spelling words to be written and phonics/common words to be read).
THURSDAY: Reading and sightwords for next Monday.

PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR CHILD HAS THEIR HOMEWORK BAG EVERY DAY.
HOMEWORK WILL BE COLLECTED IN EVERY THURSDAY AND BE REPLACED BY THE WEEK AHEAD'S HOMEWORK.

GYM: Lessons will be on Wednesdays and Fridays and pupils should bring their gym kit on these days.

It would be really helpful if pupils could bring in an old t-shirt (adult size) to use as a painting overall.

May we take this opportunity to thank you for all your help and assistance in the year ahead.

Mrs. Newlands and Miss Caldow
